DeShaunJay - Pinky's Boy (Album)

“Pinky’s Boy” opens on a poignant note. If the cover art alone didn’t let you know how personal this album is to be, then this introductory soliloquy will. It’s like he never anticipated all that would come with this life of his. He set out a goal for himself, executed it but the cost of it all was one hell of a price to pay. It saddens him to ponder just how many relationships, those bonds he thought were unbreakable just fizzle out like fairy dust, slipping through his fingers, too dissipating to grasp. Although he feels he may not make it this year, he’s still going to make the best out of this year, as if it were his last. He’s aware of all those who look up to him, who come to him for guidance, especially as a father himself. The fact that he’s able to be vulnerable like this will surely instill a sense of strength in his child, that it’s okay to be weak but we must always push forward in spite of it all. It’s beautifully painful to hear him ward off his depression on this sobering intro.

It’s been a long time coming but he’s back in her town for the “Reunion”. He’s been patiently waiting to be able to slide through to her crib. She knows he’s been out on a mission to build a better life for the both of them so she’s been anticipating this moment just as much as he has. He’s confident enough in himself to know he’ll win her over regardless of whatever spats they may have found themselves in the past. The love is still there & this reconnection is past overdue. More heartfelt testimonials on “YATW”, he’s already interweaving so much introspection into his seemingly never ending bars. He goes full Kalel on Earth 23 with “Calvin Ellis”, here to swoop in & save the day from that of which is plaguing.

Although he’s showcased a lot of maturity, that ignorance is still deep rooted & he can bring it out if necessary, as he does when rapping circles around his opps on the daunting “Still Gang”, an ominously subtle banger that’ll surely induce paranoia in the hearts & minds of those who dare think they can step to something so portentous. He just be “Goin’ Crazy” as they are thinking they could ever compete with “Junebug’s Son”. If you ain’t with this RYLTY SHT then we may never find a common ground. Great to hear these two back it, doing lyrical “Acrobatics”, already building further anticipation for more of these two on a record. Interesting that the beat is slowed down once D’Shaun comes in, like he’s stomping throughout the ruins after DeShaun absolutely blew this beat to smithereens.

It’s “Hammer Time” whenever you don’t pay DeShaun in “Advance” the respect he’s owed as one of the fiercest lyricists in this game. It’s these introspective numbers like “Pray For Me” however, that really set him leagues above any other rappers you’d dare compare him to. They will never even be able to feel the cloth he’s cut from. Even though the record is as gangsta as it gets, he don’t ever claim to be anything he’s not but in doing so, he’s gangsta, to me, gangsta is more so someone who just keeps it a buck with everybody. This is what the fuck it is, nothing more, nothing less. He’s back outside, the “Revival” of one you should fear lyrically after his performance throughout this record. Pinky & Junebug must be so damn proud to see this young man only continue to improve, personally, musically, lyrically, you name it. Only very few really do this shit, not many are this famished.
