Stepping Into Politics: My Interview with Carla-Joy Sisco, Candidate for San Antonio City Council District 2
Stepping outside of my usual element, I had the opportunity to sit down with Carla-Joy Sisco, a driven and passionate candidate running for San Antonio City Council District 2. While my usual focus leans heavily on culture, music, and creative movements, this conversation opened my eyes to the importance of leadership at the grassroots level — especially for a district that holds so much cultural and historical weight, like the Eastside of San Antonio.
From the moment our conversation began, Carla-Joy radiated a sense of purpose. She spoke candidly about her upbringing, detailing her journey with raw honesty and pride—from humble beginnings to becoming a community organizer with a relentless vision for positive change. Her story isn’t one crafted for campaign talking points; it’s a lived experience filled with the kind of resilience that connects deeply with the everyday people of District 2.
What stood out most was her vision for the Eastside — one that doesn’t just promise change but prioritizes sustainability, access, and dignity. We discussed everything from affordable housing and small business support to mental health resources and youth engagement. Her plans weren’t vague ideals but grounded strategies backed by her work in the trenches with the community.
Carla-Joy emphasized the importance of being a “visible” leader — someone who shows up, listens, and acts. If elected, she doesn’t just want to occupy a seat on the council — she wants to bring the people with her to City Hall, ensuring their voices are no longer drowned out by politics as usual.
This conversation was more than politics — it was a call to action, a reminder of how important it is to highlight the movers and shakers trying to build a better city from the inside out. For someone like me, who usually documents culture, this was a potent reminder that civic engagement is very much a part of that story.
Regardless of who you support, one thing is clear — Carla-Joy Sisco is a name to know, a voice to listen to, and a candidate whose heart is aligned with the people.
