Beast (Spoiler-Free Review)

I had the pleasure of previewing the upcoming movie “Beast” before its official release, which immediately had my attention due to the trailer centering around MMA. But this is far more than your typical fighting movie. There’s an incredible amount of resilience and character layered throughout the film, led by a powerful performance from Daniel MacPherson alongside standout supporting roles from Luke Hemsworth, Bren Foster, and Russell Crowe.

Returning to the octagon, Patton James finds himself back in the stomping grounds that once served as both his escape and his prison. Without giving too much away, the movie balances brutal action sequences with a deeply emotional core that keeps the story moving like a locomotive. The intensity is felt throughout every scene, and the grit displayed on screen pulls you deeper into the journey with each passing moment. Russell Crowe as Sammy is at its highest, not feeling like something you’ve seen before, but harnessing a level of strength you can see hints of past figures he’s played that shows how passionate he is to bring a role to life. But I wouldn’t be doing my job, not to mention the level of heart it also brings; moments of highs don’t get overshadowed by the lows witnessed in the plot. It's pain meets joy, even if it feels like a barrage of hits in a ground pound.

What I believe makes “Beast” a standout film is how grounded it feels. Beneath the punches and blood is a story about pain, redemption, inner demons, and survival. The action delivers exactly what fans of combat films want, but it’s the drama and emotional weight that truly fuel the movie and give it lasting impact. By the end, you’re not just invested in the fights; you’re invested in the man stepping inside the cage.
